Self- fulfilling Prophesy

Beautiful Disaster Rainbow Colours
If you can believe it, you can achieve it!  ~Walt Disney

I've been thinking a lot about the self-fulfilling prophesy.  The first time I learned about it was when my husband was in college.  He came home and told me about a study he learned that was done on kindergarten children.  At the beginning of the year the kids were tested in various subjects and comprehension.  The kids that scored the highest were put into one group and the kids that scored the lowest in another.

However, the teacher and the students were told that the group that scored the lowest- scored the highest and vice versa (switching them up).  By the end of the year they retested and the opposite was true!  So the kids that originally scored the highest but were told they were the low scoring group actually did test low by the end of the year.  They attributed this to the self fulfilling prophesy.  Not as much was expected from the high scoring kids so they didn't do well.  Even more amazing though- the kids that scored the lowest originally, exceeded the rest of the class by the end of the year because more was expected of them and they BELIEVED they were smarter.

This is not a theory.  It is true and happens time and time again.  Ask any successful person and they will tell you that they believed in themselves or they had someone who believed in them.  I believe it is impossible to achieve a goal if you DON"T believe you can accomplish it.

I am truly fascinated by this! Once we realize this, we can be our own coach.

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.
Thomas Jefferson

Another example of the self fulfilling prophesy is this one:
Stephanie Madon, an Iowa State University psychologist, investigated parents' expectations about their children's alcohol use. She discovered that when both parents believe that a child will abuse alcohol, in fact, the child is likely to drink more than expected. This holds true even when signs, such as past alcohol use and friends' behavior, suggest a teenager is at low risk. The findings support the social theory that prophecies are especially self-fulfilling for stereotyped groups. link Psychology Today

Could you imagine the implications on that child???

My husband told me when I was going to nursing school that it didn't matter how inherently smart I was but how hard I tried.  He is a teacher and has seen that time and time again with his students.  He is the reason I succeeded and actually did very well in school.  He believed in me.  He told me so many times that he knows for sure I have what it takes to do well and I believed him because I trust and love him and knew with all my heart he wouldn't steer me wrong. As a result I succeeded.

Can I apply this to different aspects of my life; new goals? Of course!  I had a patient who lost a considerable amount of weight.  When asked how she accomplished it she said she PRETENDED to have gastric bypass surgery.  It just goes to show you that the mind is a very powerful force!

The ones that put forth the effort and are diligent about their work, patient and determined tend to do better over all and retain more information than the ones who perhaps have more natural ability but don't apply themselves.  Makes sense.

They can because they think they can.Virgil

I think it is so important to instill confidence in our young people today.  I hope that one parent reads this and decides to treat their child differently because of it.  Who knows?  That could be the one who grows up to cure cancer, become a great explorer or inventor, possibly change the world.
